Welcome to Heworth Without Parish Council

Heworth Without is a semi-rural area approximately one and a half miles North-east of York City Centre. It sits within City of York Council's Heworth without Ward (further information can be found at: https://www.york.gov.uk/heworthwithoutward) and at the bottom of our home page.  Look for Find out where you live.

The Parish consists of around 850 dwellings, primarily bungalows and semi detached properties, mostly built in the extensive post war development period up to the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. The Parish, which is relatively low lying apart from at the north-eastern end, extends northwards to Monk Stray with Bad Bargain Lane forming the parish boundary with Osbaldwick. The Western limits of the parish are around the inter war development (NE of Hemplands Lane and Woodlands Grove) and the East is bordered by Tang Hall Beck and associated farmland. Archaeological evidence suggests that there was once a Roman settlement in this area, with Stockton Lane perhaps being part of a Roman Road linking York with the market town of Malton.

Summer Garden Competition 2024

We’ll be holding our Summer Gardening Competition in July 2024.

There will be two categories:

1. Best Front Garden.

2. Best front of house container/basket/window box display.

Free Entry; all Parish properties automatically entered.

The aim is to encourage and reward front garden and front of house gardening that enhances the local scene and brings happiness and inspiration to our neighbours.

We are looking for evidence of:

• Use of plants to bring colour and form to a front garden and front of house area.

• Sustainable gardening practice.

• Promoting wildlife.

Judging will take place w/c 15th July 2024 by HWPC and several representatives from our local gardening group, Burnholme Gardening Club, who run events through the year including an informative and encouraging programme of talks by experts.
